Comfort and Music

Source: Wix

Music is therapy. Music is nirvana. Music is release. Music is comfort! So while I was struggling with what to write for my first post, I was listening to a Spotify playlist I recently made (I'm new to the world of this wonder), and named Comfort (I'll attach the link at the end of the post). I created this post one morning when I had too many deadlines to meet and not enough time. While my "Meant for work" playlist is good, I felt this crisis demanded something better. Hence this playlist. The playlist got me thinking the latent power that music has, which calms people, comforts them. Hence my first post.

For as long as I can remember music has always soothed me, no matter what. Be it my elder sister doing her riyaaz on the harmonium or the ad jingles on the radio, I have always loved it all. The ting-ting-ti-ting of the Britannia Good Day advertisement has always had me bopping like SpongeBob on the left. But, I digress. Comfort to me ranges from the "Hmmm" in Lucky Ali's O Sanam to the way the bass drops in Rihanna (ft. Calvin Harris)'s We Found Love, and pretty much every thing in between.

Like I said before, I had a lot on my mind as well as my plate and all I wanted was to hear myself think. I didn't really have anything particular on my mind as I was picking and choosing the songs (you'll find I make a playlist every time I'm upset or need to think). Once I was done, I realised the songs I had chosen for this particular playlist, were all songs that give me a sense of security, a sense of peace and belonging. They were all songs that had "been there" for me. Soothing me as I spent night after sleepless night or had a particularly nasty fight with a loved one. Hence, the name, Comfort.

This activity of mine got me to think how I like millions before me, and billions after me will turn to this magic we call music for that feeling I get whenever Lucky Ali's "Hmmm" comes on or when Enrique croons "No Me Digas Adios". It got me to further think how no matter our differences, we can all connect with music. I'm not much of a social animal but I have earned my share of friends over a particular song or a tune.

Don't you feel connected with all the comments they leave on a song in YouTube? Well I sure lose myself in that ever growing rabbit-hole more often than not. I feel connected to all these faceless strangers and their thoughts, understanding how their feelings are sometimes (dis)similar to mine.

However, that was how I felt when I thought of connecting comfort with music. Tell me your thoughts or what you think is your comfort music.

Here's a link to all the songs and the Spotify playlist I was talking about in the post:
